Meet Dr. Edith Bracho-Sánchez

Q&A With Dr. Edith Bracho Sanchez

Q. What is your favorite part about being Latina?

A. The way I was raised, we Latinas got a whole familia behind us.

Q. What is your superpower?

A. I will outwork anyone. Many of us women, and even more so women of color, have learned to do this. So it is a superpower I’m sure I share with many others.

Q. What is one time you were underestimated?

A. There’s been many, but I will never forget arriving in this country without speaking much English in high school and being placed in a class with all the kids who had failed English and math. P.S. they weren’t really getting any extra help. They were just lumped together to get them out of other teachers’ hair. I was really good at math too, still am! So, the assumption I’d fail annoyed me. I was like, es en serio?

Q. What inspired you to start the Informada newsletter?

A. I actually really love the news. But I felt like no one was talking to the “me’s” of the world. No one is speaking to our growing community of powerful, bicultural, bilingual, increasingly educated and sophisticated women. So, I decided to create a space for us and get my fellow Latinas and everyone who supports us caught up on news, brands, happenings, and the work of other amazing Latinas. Plus, my inbox needed a little color.

Q.What is the mission behind Informada?

A. To create a community of women who are in on the latest and who support and uplift each other.

Q. How would your close friends describe you?

A. They’d tell you I am the “ideas” girl! Ha!

Q. What was one of the first things you thought about when you decided you wanted to start a newsletter?

A. I was like why didn’t I think of this before?! And then I thought of the 10 million cool things I wanted to put on it.

Q. If you could give a gift to the audience through IamInformada, what would you want it to be?

A. Some really good, regular laughs. I know you asked for one, but I also want to remind them of their power and introduce them to other Latinas doing amazing things.

Q. What’s an unusual topic that you hope to cover here in the future?

A. I’m really out to find out the stories of Latinos in our communities. The ones we don’t hear about. One of the first stories we thought of was the story of this Mexican abuela with a Youtube channel with more views than Martha Stewart. We were like that’s going into the newsletter, probably more than once!

Q. Putting out a newsletter is a lot of work! What motivates you to work hard?

A. I believe in it. I really do.

Q. Who is the Informada reader/follower and why do they need to subscribe?

A. The busy modern Latina and anyone who supports us and knows we are the ones to watch. For everyone else who doesn’t know that yet, we’ll be here when you open your eyes.
